What is CTE?

It has been something that has been getting more attention in the news media in New York and around the country. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a condition caused by repeated head injuries. It is a rare condition but is often found in athletes, specifically in contact sports, such as football.

Because CTE is caused by repeated injury to the brain, it occurs over time. It is also a fairly new discovery, and there have not been many studies into it, so a lot about it is unknown. Most information is general and based on what has been seen, although it is not definitive. There is no cure or treatment that will stop the symptoms of the disease.

If you have CTE, the symptoms will interfere mostly with your behavior, mood and thinking. You may have uncontrollable mood swings, troubles with your memory, problems with speaking and aggression issues. You may also experience trouble with your motor skills and other senses. Symptoms are often similar to dementia. Most people with CTE are treated in the same manner as people who have dementia to help them live with the symptoms.

CTE can progress and move throughout your brain, leading to more severity of symptoms and additional symptoms as time goes on. It is not an injury that is confined to one section of your brain. The condition has also been linked to death because it can cause suicidal thoughts. This information is for educational purposes only. It is not intended as legal advice.
