How can I prevent a home break-in?

On Behalf of | Aug 5, 2018 | Violent Crimes

Home robberies are a terrifying prospect to residents of New York. That’s why preventing them from occurring is so important. While not all robberies entail violence, you don’t want to risk you and your family’s lives to the whims of a dangerous criminal. Accordingly, home security company ADT offers the following advice to help keep your home safe.

Make Sure Your Home Is Secure

Many home break-ins are crimes of opportunity. In some cases, criminals can access your home through an unlocked door or window, as well as many other access points. Consider your garage door and how easy it can be to pull away from your home for the day without actually closing it behind you. Make sure you and your family are diligent about securing all doors and windows all the time. If you do have a garage door, consider installing a remote entry to allow you to close it from anywhere.

Install Lighting

Burglars are often deterred by well-lit homes, as it can call attention to their criminal activities. That’s why it’s recommended that you install lighting that operates via a motion detector, which will trigger anytime someone comes onto to your property. Some homes even have smart lighting installed, which allows homeowners to turn lights on while they’re away.

Take Care of Your Yard

While it seems less likely, overgrown trees and shrubs can actually offer criminals a hiding place around your home. Trees can also provide access to windows, which may not be secured at all times. Taking care of your yard will deprive any potential burglars a hiding place and reduce access points significantly. You also want to make sure you clean up any mail left at your property, as it could indicate that the home is unoccupied at the moment (which may possibly entice a criminal).
